Torbay Hospital maternity department has benefited from £1,000 raised by a local baby swimming class. Water Babies ran sponsored pirate and princess-themed baby swimming lessons in a bid to raise money for the hospital, reports the Torquay Herald Express.

The lessons saw the little ones wear pirate or princess outfits while in the pool, with diving for treasure, casting princess wishes and walking the plank being some of the activities they enjoyed.

Kate Evans, who runs the baby swimming lessons, told the news provider: "We are thrilled to be able to support our local maternity departments. Almost all of the babies who swim with us will have used the maternity departments and benefited from the excellent care they deliver. It is fantastic to be able to give something back to them.

"We are delighted that the money is being spent on making the birthing rooms more like a home-from-home."

Delivery suite coordinator at Torbay Hospital, Angela Thompson, said to the newspaper that the hospital was "delighted" with the donation, which will help to improve the environment in the birthing suites. She hopes that the money will aid in creating a more positive birthing experience for women across south Devon.

Currently fundraising for the Delivery Suite Normal Birth Group is ongoing, as the hospital hopes to raise enough money to improve all of the birthing rooms, allowing all women who go to the hospital to benefit.

Ms Evans said that the baby swimming classes are designed to help parents and babies make the most out of little ones' natural affinity with the water. The curriculum aims to teach water confidence and safety to families with youngsters from just two days old.
