If you are planning a summer holiday this year, you are sure to have lots of family fun playing in the swimming pool or on the beach. But remember, when on holiday you must always be vigilant in and around the water. To help, we've compiled a list of our top five quick water safety tips.

  1. Only swim in supervised areas, where a lifeguard is on patrol.
  2. Learn what the beach flags mean. On the continent, a 'Red for Danger', 'Yellow for Caution' and 'Green Safe to Swim' flag system is used, but often on the liberal side. It's better to be safe and only swim when the green flag is showing.
  3. When swimming in the sea, always make sure that a sensible adult is present, and that there is someone on the shore who knows that you are swimming.
  4. For younger children, whether they can swim or not, always use a buoyancy aid or personal flotation device to be safe around the water.
  5. Learn what to do and how to get help in an emergency.

Finally, you can download the water safety advice booklet here, which we created in partnership with the Swimming Teachers' Association (STA). It contains more detailed information about staying safe in and around the water on holiday. Be sure to share the advice with your children, too.

Have a great summer!
