Swimming when you're pregnant is a good form of exercise that can help you to get used to your changing weight and shape, without being too high impact.

It is a good option whether you're used to regular exercise or not, as it provides an easier type of exercise due to the fact that the water supports your weight, reducing strain on your limbs and joints.

As with any type of exercise, swimming while pregnant could help to make labour easier, as it will help to increase your endurance and also stretch out your muscles, making movements easier.

However, as with all forms of exercise while pregnant, you should consider a number of safety aspects. Not only will being aware of these potential problems keep you safer in the water, but it will also ensure that you don't overdo it.

Stay hydrated

Being in the water can make you forget that you need to drink water. As with any exercise, whether you're pregnant or not, you need to stay hydrated, so having a glass of water before you start and stopping every 20 minutes for another drink is recommended.

You should also be sure to have a drink once you get out of the water. This will keep your fluid levels up and make exercising easier.

Know when to stop

No matter how early you are in your pregnancy, you shouldn't overdo the exercise. While swimming is low impact, it can still leave you feeling tired and could make you a bit achy if you overstretch yourself.

Ideally, you should be able to hold a conversation while exercising when pregnant. This means that if you are getting out of breath, you should stop and take it easier. This is especially true if you were not used to exercising before you got pregnant.

You shouldn't hurt

Because swimming is low impact, it shouldn't hurt as you are doing it. If you are feeling any twinges or pains as you are swimming, it is a good idea to stop.

If you suffer from muscle weakness, contractions, bleeding, headaches, chest pains or dizziness, get out of the water and calm down. It is also a good idea to see your doctor or midwife to report these symptoms as a precaution.
