Residents of Hartlepool could benefit from the return of a free swimming initiative that's being rolled out this summer. Children under the age of 16 throughout the area can enjoy a chance to get in the water thanks to Hartlepool Borough Council, reports the Hartlepool Mail.

Last year, the scheme allowed almost 7,000 children in the borough to benefit from free swimming sessions throughout the summer holidays. Due to the huge success of the initiative, the council has opted to bring it back, giving more children a chance to benefit.

Those below the age of 16 are able to take part in free swimming sessions in the mornings at Mill House Leisure Centre throughout the school holiday. They can also make the most of the free bus service – provided to 4,197 children last year – which is supplied by the local authority.

The buses will pick children up from each of the schools throughout the town, before heading to Mill House pool. Once the sessions are over, they will then drop the children back at the schools.

Christopher Akers-Belcher, council leader, told the news provider: “The free swims scheme last year was really popular and I am delighted that we are able to repeat it this summer. It is really important that we encourage children and the young people of our town to take part in recreational activities.

“Swimming is a great way to keep fit and if we can encourage all young people to be active in their early years, there is more chance of them staying fit and healthy as they grow older.”

Those wanting to make the most of the free swims will be able to from August 4th through to August 29th. The sessions will run Monday to Friday – apart from Bank Holiday Monday on August 25th – from 10 am to 12:30 pm.

Priority is to be given to those children using the free bus service, but there are a large number of spaces available.

If you want to get more information on the scheme and enrol your children for it, call Mill House Leisure Centre on 01429 223791.
