A swimming scheme operating over the summer has seen huge success, with hundreds of children opting in across East Sussex. Over 700 children signed up for Freedom Leisure's free swimming initiative, which started on July 1st.

The Sussex Express reports that the Freedom Leisure scheme – which operates in partnership to run the Summerfields Leisure Centre – saw a huge number of children and families get involved with the new programme. The not-for-profit trust launched the free swim initiative to encourage youngsters and their parents to be active throughout the summer months.

The scheme is still ongoing and open to both members and non-members of the leisure centre, allowing all families with young children to make the most of the chance for free swimming.

All parents have to do is register their kids once, which then allows them to make the most of free swimming at all public swimming times. Once registered, children can swim as many times as they want, which is great for keeping them active and improving their confidence in the water.

The only thing parents must keep in mind in order to be inline with health and safety requirements is that one full-paying adult must be present with every one or two children going for a swim.

Matt James, leisure centre manager, told the news provider: "We're thrilled with the uptake so far. It's been great to see an increase in the number of local children swimming and enjoying the water for fun with their family and friends.

“It's important for children to stay active during the summer holidays, when school PE programs aren't running. However, we appreciate that this can be an expensive time for families. Our free swimming initiative is the perfect solution.

Under normal admission, an under-fives swim costs £1.25. Children aged five to eight cost £2.60 That could tot up to quite a saving for parents over the school holidays and will help make their pocket money go a little further.”
