5 Things to Consider When Buying Buoyancy Aids

Buoyancy aids can be really beneficial for children or adults who need that extra bit of help when swimming. They can help to build confidence in the water by supporting those who may not be strong or capable swimmers.

If you are considering buying a buoyancy aid – whether for yourself or your child – there are a few things you should consider beforehand in order to ensure that you get the right product for your needs.

Is it what you need?

Buoyancy aids are designed to help you swim, not keep you afloat for a long period of time. If you are looking for something to help someone when swimming, a buoyancy aid is the right choice. However, if you are looking for something to use as a safety device when sailing, for example, then you will actually need a life jacket.

Unlike life jackets, buoyancy aid jackets don't inflate. They contain foam floats that support your natural buoyancy, allowing you or your child to get used to moving in the water, while helping to develop confidence and swimming technique.

What type of buoyancy aid is best?

The type of buoyancy aid you need largely depends on what type of support is required. If you want to be able to maintain full body movement without having to hold on to something, the Original Konfidence Jacket could be a good idea. The jacket allows youngsters to swim without restricting the movement of their arms and legs, helping to strengthen swimming technique.

However, if only a small amount of support is needed – such as for junior swimmers – a jacket may not be required. Instead, something simple like the Vorgee Junior Kickboard could be all you need. The kickboard is also a great tool for those who no longer require a buoyancy jacket but still need a confidence boost.

Is the design suitable?

Once you know what type of buoyancy aid is suitable to meet your needs, you should check that the design is right for you or your child.

The design of a buoyancy aid can affect how much support it gives, how comfortable it is and how much movement it allows, as well as its appearance. It can also alter how much support is provided, as the amount of flotation foam included in the jackets and where it is located can alter the level of buoyancy.

For younger swimmers, it is a good idea to go for items that provide as much buoyancy as possible, whereas for older swimmers jackets that allow you to remove floatation foam as their confidence grows are a good option.

Luckily, here at Konfidence we have a full range of buoyancy aids available, helping you to find the right item. With a range of jackets suitable for babies aged from one right up to adults, plus a number of floatation devices, you can be sure that there is something that will work for you.

Colour

It may seem like a small thing, but if you are using buoyancy aids to try to encourage children to enjoy being in the water, colour can play a big part. Choosing a shade that your child likes can be the difference between them wanting to use their buoyancy aid and them obstinately refusing, which could lead to them not wanting to go in the water.

If you are buying a buoyancy aid for someone else – especially young children – you could try to get them involved in the process. Show them the product, let them have a say and get them excited by it. This way, you are more likely to get positive results.

Colour can also improve safety for your children, as you are better able to see bright shades. This can help you to keep them in sight on busy beaches at all times.

Durability

As well as function, you want to ensure that any buoyancy aid is highly durable. This is especially the case when buying for children – we all know how uncareful they can be with things. You want something that is going to last for as long as it will fit you or your child, if not even longer.

At Konfidence, you can be sure that you're getting the best quality. We have worked with swim schools, swimming teachers and parents to create products that are of the highest quality and are sure to last. As well as being durable, they are easy to use and comfortable; ensuring that you are completely happy with every product.
