As a new parent, you'll have lots of hopes and dreams for your baby - if you're getting any sleep at all - and it's easy to get carried away with all the ways you can allegedly assist your child's development. Swimming is an activity that can bring you and your baby hours of pleasure, and has also been shown to be a potential positive aid to concentration and awareness, but that doesn't mean that you need to take your baby swimming every day in order to turn him or her into a child prodigy. It's far better to take your time, select comfortable, warm baby swimwear and just get on with enjoying yourself.
Appropriate Baby Swimwear
Whenever you start swimming with your child, you need to choose baby swimwear that's appropriate for its age and stage. Very young babies will need you to hold and support them all the time they're in the water, so there's no point in buying flotation devices at this stage. Instead, choose swimwear that keeps your baby warm and make sure that you use dedicated swim nappies and covers so that you keep the pool area hygienic. If you're not ready to take your child swimming when he or she is very young, that's fine. Research suggests that the earlier you give your baby the opportunity to experience a pool environment, the better, but both you and your baby need to be ready in order for you to get the most out of it:
0-6 months - many parents don't take their babies swimming too early as they assume they need to have their full course of immunisations first, but most doctors will tell you that babies can go to the pool even before the immunisations begin. This of course is a personal choice. At this stage, you'll need reliable baby swimwear that includes nappies and suits that keep your baby warm whilst swimming.
6-12 months - parents may want to start swimming with their babies at this stage because they are more aware, and may be beginning to move by themselves. You should still hold your baby all the time in the water at this stage and make sure that you use baby swimwear that keeps them warm.
12-18 months - if your baby is walking by itself at this stage, or enjoying confident movement, you might want to consider a flotation jacket once he or she reaches 16-18 months. Before this, you will need to support your baby in the water all the time as they build their confidence.
18 months and over - many babies have experienced the pool by this stage, but if you are taking your time introducing your baby to new activities, you may only now be thinking of going swimming. Dedicated flotation jackets or suits are ideal at this stage, but if your baby is brand new to swimming, make sure you don't scare them by letting them float alone too early. Giving your child the opportunity to become confident in the water means that you need to be there for them for several sessions before you think about letting them float by themselves.
